Extended Universe Characters

This page introduces science-fiction characters from the wider Risky Red universe beyond the central mission, expanding its military sci-fi worldbuilding. Here you’ll find figures whose roles, alliances, histories, and conflicts shape the broader setting—some are allies, some are adversaries, and some operate in the grey space between.

Terrell

Role: Kaevan’s Partner / Double Agent

Terrell operates alongside Kaevan as a fellow double agent, embedded within the same intelligence network that spans both the AFP and the Capital Alliance.

Captain Sutter

Role: Battle Captain

Captain Sutter works across both the bridge and the Tactical Operations Center. A versatile officer trusted with special projects directly assigned by the Colonel.

LT Sands

Role: Hermes Copilot

LT Sands serves as copilot aboard a Hermes-class vessel. A skilled aviator operating in support of AFP operations.

Colonel Stark

Role: Commanding Officer, Athena Carrier

Colonel Stark commands an Athena-class carrier, one of the AFP’s most formidable warships. A senior officer whose decisions carry strategic weight across the sector.

LTCOL Epson

Role: Commanding Officer, Artemis Battleship

LTCOL Epson commands an Artemis-class battleship, a heavy combat vessel deployed along the most contested corridors of the Demarcation Line.

Captain John Royce

Era: Approximately 200 years before the events of Risky Red

Captain John Royce was an inmate on death row, weeks away from execution. A former captain of a small space frigate making routine trips between Earth and Mars, he was convicted after a faulty cargo container lost oxygen during a smuggling run, resulting in the suffocation deaths of a dozen illegal migrants.

In lieu of execution, Royce was offered the opportunity to traverse an experimental spatial tunnel. If he survived, he would receive a life sentence working in a Martian mine, with limited freedoms restored. The experiment was largely a success — Royce traversed the tunnel in both directions — but he suffered a lasting psychological condition that left him scatterbrained and cognitively impaired.

The public outcry nearly shut the project down entirely. However, other inmates on death row and serving life sentences volunteered for future experiments in exchange for reprieves. This led to the passage of the Captain Royce Inmate Service Participant bill — known as CRISP. Of the 573 inmates who participated, 22 died. The losses were deemed acceptable by the government and scientific community, and in 2183, the official Thorne Transit Tunnel network was established — named after the American theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, who had pioneered the concept of wormholes in the late 20th century.

Captain John Royce is remembered as the first human being to survive faster-than-light transit — an accidental pioneer whose criminal record became a footnote in one of humanity’s greatest achievements.

Scotty Scarecrow

Role: AFP Informant / Miner / Occasional Jack Crew Operator

A decorated Army veteran, Scotty Scarecrow was severely wounded in combat and left the military behind. He now works as a miner on LG4 and serves as a covert informant for Colonel Stoddard. When the need arises, he runs supplies as part of a Jack Crew to rogue elements operating within the Demarcation Line.
